| Content is King |
Today I am disclosing about the content in blog and websites..
The last thing the most bloggers want to worry about is Search Engine Optimisation. Not all bloggers are directly involved in web development and quite a lot have no intention of doing so. However, im sure all bloggers want more traffic to their site as more traffic means more readers. More traffic also means more revenue (well it should!).
In this post i hope i can show that you don’t need to be a SEO specialist to get traffic from the major search engines.
Original is Best
The major search engines use different algorithms to determine what order pages are listed when a search term is input. However, they are all striving towards providing the ‘perfect’ search facility for their visitors. To do this they want the top results to be relevant.
We alll use the internet so much nowadays we sometimes forget one of the the main ways we find information on the web. Internet users link to websites and articles they like. If i find a good wordpress theme on another site i will post a link to it here because i think my visitors would benefit from it, if i come across a new flash game which is fun ill maybe post it at one of the forums i frequent to share it with everyone and if i come across a great article on my favourite team ill email my friends about it.
Now you may be reading this and be thinking that im stating the obvious here and you would be right! However, this simple linking system is one which search engines rely upon greatly. Good websites get more links and references than bad ones, good articles get linked more than bad ones and so on and so on. The system is far from perfect but on the whole it works the way it should.
Which brings me to the main point im trying to convey here : Content is King
I reiterate that you don’t need to know much about search engine optimisation or web development to get good traffic from the major search engines.
Write Original Posts
It takes time to write original articles (like this one!). If im working on my blog at night and im tired then i sometimes just browse for good websites that i think my readers will want to visit. It’s something that i will continue to do as i like spreading the word about good sites, particular ones which i think my readers will want to visit. However, the benefit to my blog is minimal with regards to search engines and traffic.
If i write a good article then there is a good chance that other bloggers, readers and website owners will link to it. If 10 people link to the article then its 10 links to my website that the search engines will find. Therefore the article will have generated traffic from the sites who linked to it and once the search engines do an update my blog will hopefully be placed higher in certain search terms because of the increased references to my blog on other sites. This would also help you increase your google page rank though i dont want to go discuss page rank too much in this article.
Consider this : Instead of spending a few hours writing the article i mentioned above i instead browsed the web for a few hours and made 5 posts linking to some great reources for my readers. Whilst this will definately help out my blog readers, it will not help my blog with the search engines that much. For example, say you own a blog called ‘Blog A’. You read on another blog, ‘Blog B’, about a great article on ‘Blog C’. ‘Blog A’ would never link to ‘Blog B’ about this article as it would just link to ‘Blog C’ ie. why would anyone ever link to the page that links to a good article when you can just link to the good article itself (cut out the middle man!).
I’m not suggesting that those 5 posts were worthless, far from it. However, its easy to see how much more benefit you get from writing good quality original articles. I encourage you all to continue to link to the sites and pages you love, just remember the search engine, traffic and money benefits that you will gain from original material.
Summary
I’ve kinda rabbled on a lot about this topic but i wanted to make sure bloggers who have no web development experience understand that if they continue to take the time to write good quality posts, traffic via word of mouth and from search engines will continue to increase their audience.
Good luck!
